DO I NEED AN ENDOSCOPIC FORAMINOTOMY?
An Endoscopic Foraminotomy is a minimally invasive technique that enlarges the nerve root openings in order to eliminate the narrowing of the foramina. This technique removes a small amount of bone in the spinal foramina, which are tiny openings in each spinal vertebrae through which the spinal cord, arteries, and other nerves pass. By removing this small portion of bone, the foramina opening becomes larger, which relieves pressure on nerves and other spinal structures. This results in pain relief.
There are several spinal conditions that can be attributed to changes within the foramina. They include:
- Aging
- Bulging Disc
- Degenerative disc changes
- Excessive wear and tear from day to day activities
- Facet joint syndrome
- Herniated discs
- Injury
- Spinal stenosis
- Spondylosis
The Endoscopic Foraminotomy procedure is most often performed in an outpatient setting, allowing patients to go home the same day the minimally invasive surgery is performed. This minimally invasive procedure preserves mobility and allows patients to recover more quickly. An Endoscopic Foraminotomy allows for a shorter recovery time than a traditional open back surgery, and has longer lasting results.

The procedure typically takes about one to two hours. A tiny incision is made in the back or neck that permits the surgeon to access the damaged area. The surgeon will insert a very small tube through a small incision. From there, a tiny camera (endoscopic) is inserted which allows the surgeon to see and perform the procedure with precision and accuracy.
Prior to moving forward with the procedure, there are a few factors to consider before determining if this is the right procedure for you. These factors include:
- Medical history
- Condition diagnosis
- Progression of your condition
- Medical imaging such as a
- MRI or x-ray
- Prior treatments completed
