DO I NEED A MICRODISCECTOMY?
The discs in your spine play a role in holding the vertebrae in your spine together, act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae, and are responsible for the mobility of your spine. These discs can experience wear-and-tear as you age or become damaged from an injury or accident.
When conservative, non-surgical treatments are not effective or your condition worsens, a Microdiscectomy can be the next step in your path to finding a pain free life. Common spine conditions treated by a Microdiscectomy include:
- Bulging Disc
- Disc Degeneration
- Disc Tear
- Herniated Disc
- Lower Back Pain
- Pinched or Damaged Nerve
- Spinal Stenosis
The surgeons and specialists at Oasis Orthopedic and Spine are ready to help you find relief from your back pain. If you suffer from a painful disc condition and your symptoms have not improved with conservative care, a minimally invasive Microdiscectomy could be right for you. Try our treatment finder below to see if a Microdiscectomy is the right treatment for you.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR MICRODISCECTOMY?
Conservative treatment is not always able to provide sufficient pain relief. If conservative treatment is not working for you, or your disc condition is deemed too severe for a non-surgical approach, you may be a candidate for a Microdiscectomy. Patients who undergo a Microdiscectomy have been experiencing pain for six weeks or more without improvement.
During a Microdiscectomy, a one-inch or smaller incision is made. Unlike a traditional discectomy surgery, the muscles and other soft tissues are moved aside to access the area of the problematic or damaged disc rather than cutting through them. This minimally invasive approach is better for you because it offers:
- Smaller incisions
- Less blood loss
- Less trauma go surrounding tissues and muscles
- Reduced risk of muscle damage
- Reduced risk of infection
- Less rehabilitation required
A Microdiscectomy takes less time than a traditional discectomy. Most can be completed in one hour, allowing you to go home within a few hours.
Whether your disc pain is from age related wear-and tear or an injury, it is important to seek treatment before your condition worsens. Find out if you are a candidate for a Microdiscectomy by trying our candidacy checker tool below.
